Tournament MVP Brennan O’Neill’s five goals lifts Team USA to 10-7 victory for second consecutive WLC title and 11th in 14 tournaments
After Team USA defeated Canada in the opening game of the World Lacrosse Championship on June 21, veteran American attack Rob Pannell was pleased but hardly overjoyed.
It was O’Neil’s goal with 2:26 remaining and the Americans looking to expand on an 8-7 lead that proved to be the difference. Michael Sowers scored twice and Kiernan McArdle, Tom Schrieber and Charlie Bertrand also scored for the Americans, who finished with a 26-20 edge in shots on goal, a 13-8 advantage in face-offs won and benefited from goalie Blaze Riorden’s eight saves.O’Neill, who registered a hat trick in that 7-5 opening win over Canada, opened scoring at 13:16 of the first quarter by ripping a running shot from an angle past team Canada goalkeeper Dillon Ward.
Canada again evened things up with third quarter goals from Byrne and Connor Fields and the Americans again pushed back ahead on another O’Neill score and one from McArdle, giving them a 6-4 lead going into the fourth.
