A group of South Carolina parents and teachers’ advocates are challenging a new state law establishing private education vouchers with public money. In a lawsuit filed Thursday, the South Carolina Education Association and others say the state’s highest court should toss out the program.

A group of South Carolina parents and teachers’ advocates filed a challenge Thursday, Oct. 26, to a new law establishing private education vouchers with public money in the conservative state.
The challengers expressed concern that state money would make its way to private schools that could discriminate against their disabled or LGBTQ children, while also undermining support for rural districts and exacerbating segregation.
“On behalf of the parents and children of our state, I’m looking forward to a quick victory in favor of disadvantaged students who deserve better,” Republican state Sen. Larry Grooms wrote in a statement to AP.as many as 16 states have some form of the vouchers
