The tax laws were very different in the 1970s, and updated wills may be appropriate.

Q: We had our wills prepared by a big law firm in downtown HoustonThey kept the originals in their vault. Now we are in our 80s, and our children are in their 60s, and none of us likes going downtown anymore. Is there any reason we shouldn't get our wills and take them to another lawyer who lives on the west side of Houston? Or should we keep them in our fireproof safe or simply give them to one of our kids?Hopefully, that law firm still exists and still has the originals.

The original documents you retrieve should be kept in a safe place. Your safe should be fine, but giving them to one of your children would be acceptable as well. You do not need to find a new lawyer near where you live for the sole purpose of having that lawyer hold your original wills.
