Houston Grand Opera supporters live in hope of experiencing moments like the one Tamara Wilson delivered Friday in Puccini’s “Tosca.” Making her debut performance in the title role, a benchmark of the operatic soprano repertoire, Wilson tallied another milestone in her long HGO history as soon as she breathed life into the honeyed opening notes of “Vissi d’arte.”

The aria comes midway through the second act, as Tosca laments her apparent abandonment by God. The hot-tempered yet devout opera singer, a Beyonce-level superstar diva in circa-1800 Rome, has good reason to be: her lover, the idealistic painter Cavaradossi, is presently being flayed by the dastardly Baron Scarpia’s goons, even as Tosca does her best to short-circuit the villain’s lascivious advances.

“Tosca,” which continues through May 5 at the Wortham Center’s Brown Theater, is not a complicated opera, but boy is it effective. Its bones are the love triangle between Tosca, Cavaradossi, and Scarpia, although the shape is altogether lopsided. Tosca and Cavaradossi love each other passionately, despite her unfortunate habit of assuming he’s carrying on with other women.

There’s a lot going on in the background, too. Scarpia’s corrupt regime is threatened by the not-so-distant armies of Napoleon; suspicion and misinformation abound. Cavaradossi’s opening-scene rendezvous with recently escaped political prisoner Angelossi sets the plot in motion, sparking a chain of events that climaxes with Tosca plunging a knife into Scarpia’s back, blood gushing all over the wooden crates and marble statues of the evil police chief’s office.

Conducted by Shepherd School alum Ben Manis, Puccini’s lush and immersive score flows from moments of great warmth and tranquility to deliciously exciting drama. Wilson and tenor Jonathan Tetelman, a brave and noble Cavaradossi, display a combustible chemistry onstage together; their doomed duet in the opera’s closing moments, shortly before Scarpia reaches from beyond the grave to exact his final revenge, is an island of tenderness in an ocean of turmoil.
