At the red carpet for LutherTheFallenSun's premiere, we spoke to Neil Cross, idriselba, andyserkis, and Dermot Crowley about what the netflix movie represents for the franchise and how Luther's story might end:
After five seasons on the BBC network, Luther has finally made the leap to feature films with Luther: The Fallen Sun. This movie continues where the TV show left off, with DCI John Luther sent to jail for his history of bending the rules in his dogged pursuit of justice against the most ruthless serial killers in London.
Neil Cross: One of the great ironies of the character is that I love him! I love John Luther. I know him inside out. I know his soul. I know what frightens him. I know what he needs. And I love the actor who plays him; I've known him for so many years. Thirteen or fourteen years now, Idris and I have been working on this thing. And yet, somehow, although I love them both, all I ever do is think of ways to put them through hell. I don't know where that comes from; that drive.
I worked with him before, on a show called Doctor Who, and we had a blast on that, but Season 5 of Luther was something special. We had a really good energy, between the three of us. It seemed to me, then, that we found the core team. That was the three of us, who would take it to the next stage. The film has always been a dream for us, but it gives us sort of a larger playing field. I love Luther! I love Luther, the TV show. I think we took it as far as we can go. And now, we have the film landscape. We can go to different worlds. We can take Luther out of London and put him in other places. You know what I mean? And just tell wider stories.
Interestngly, when Schenk first came in, he came on the guy's tail, he was going to take him in! And so it's grown in a different way and I'm absolutely delighted, yeah.
