The New York Jets believe Aaron Rodgers has the arm that can change everything for them. But his impact as a teacher off the field is already making an even bigger impact.
But for the players and coaches who have been working with Rodgers over the past four months, there’s already an image that can define what he brings to the Jets: It’s Rodgers, standing on the sideline during the first two preseason games, wearing a headset and locked in on seemingly every play.
But Rodgers’ affect is being felt throughout the franchise, like a jolt of electricity surging from defibrillators and racing through everyone, from the head coach to the assistants to the 53rd guy on the roster. Here’s a look at how — In every meeting, huddle and walkthrough — he is demanding excellence and accountability from everyone.Jets coach Robert Saleh took heat from critics after therevealed his admiration for Rodgers and a willingness to let the quarterback do things his way.
“When they take control of the standard,” Saleh said, “they take the messaging that’s come from top down and they take it to the locker room and they champion that message and it becomes a very collaborative effort in the sense that coaches can spend more time digging into the tape, players focus on absorbing information, having communication with the coaches, controlling the standard, how we practice, how we do everything.
“He might be one of the first people to come up with a question to the coaches during install,” left guard Laken Tomlinson said in June. “He may be one of the first people to point out anything in meetings, make an adjustment, or tell us what he’ll be thinking during certain parts of the meeting. Which is great, because he’s going to be the one in the huddle, so when you have that in meetings and you get that from the get-go, you know what to expect in the huddle.
Lazard said Rodgers is taking even more ownership in this situation because aside from him and Cobb, everyone in the building is learning a completely new offense. “I like to test them on some stuff that they haven’t thought about before or maybe it was installed on day one. Maybe it is something we talked about in the spring, just so they know kind of how I operate. Everything is up, number one, but the best players are the smartest players. So anytime we are on that field, whether it’s a half-line walk-through or a full 11-on-11 play, they should playing with their brains turned on.
