EU officials have derided the British Government’s ‘chaotic’ approach to negotiations and said the much-reviled ‘Swiss mess’ is ‘not on the table’ 🔍 Analysis by LeoCendro
, but the real obstacle to such an arrangement would probably come from Brussels, according to EU insiders.he EU’s fourth-biggest trading partner, has partial access to the bloc’s single marketBut the arrangement is based on a convoluted patchwork of no fewer than 120 separate bilateral agreements between the two sides, many of which must be regularly renegotiated.
EU officials refer to it as the “Swiss mess’” They also made it clear during the Brexit negotiations, when ‘no cherry-picking’ was the EU mantra, that did not want to replicate the convoluted Swiss model. “The Swiss model is not on the table,” says Andreas Schieder, the Austrian MEP who co-wrote the European Parliament’s 2021 bill on the EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement . “While the Swiss model would bring the UK closer to the EU than it is, it would open another basket of issues. We honestly would not want this.”
While UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt last week suggested that trade barriers with the EU would be removed in the coming years, he did not indicate how far he thought such an arrangement could go. Mr Schieder says the UK’s inability to define what it wants suggests confusion at the heart of the Government.is a reality. We accept the reality if we like it or not. But now the UK needs to know what they want.
EU officials say they loathe the messy Swiss arrangement and have been locked in negotiations with Bern for decades to bring its jumble of deals under a more orderly “institutional framework”, which would involve Swiss laws changing automatically as EU rules evolved. It would also require Switzerland to follow the rulings of the European Court of Justice.
