One Piece Film: Red set an amazing box office record during its theatrical run, but Makoto Shinkai's Suzume has managed to completely surpass it.

In an incredible turn of events, Suzume has just blown past One Piece Film: Red’s record to become the fourth highest-grossing anime film of all time. All the more recent One Piece films have been met with varying degrees of success, but One Piece Film: Red quickly surpassed its predecessors in both critical and financial success.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT One Piece Film: Red was one of the biggest anime films to be released in recent years, but its success has just been surpassed by Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume, which is out in Japan and will release in America on April 14th. Following the Easter weekend, Suzume’s worldwide gross stands at over $250 million, allowing it to take Red’s place as the fourth highest-grossing anime film of all time .

Why Suzume Beat One Piece Film: Red’s Box Office Suzume surpassing One Piece Film: Red’s box office after only five months compared to Red’s eight-month-long run is an incredible feat, but it’s actually nowhere near as surprising as one might think. While One Piece is a massive anime franchise, Red wasn’t completely newcomer friendly, with many story elements assuming that people would have finished One Piece's Wano arc as opposed to only watching the anime.

Can Suzume Surpass Other Big Anime Films During Its Run? It’s nothing but impressive that Suzume could surpass One Piece Film: Red’s box office record, but that begs the question of whether it can surpass the anime films still above it.

Even less likely, however, is the idea of Suzume surpassing the highest-grossing anime film, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. With a box office gross of over $500 million , Mugen Train has a virtually insurmountable lead over all other anime films, and it’s hard to see Suzume being able to almost double its box office when its theatrical run is likely going to end around the summer.
