A man accused of shooting a police officer while he was handcuffed inside a police station has appeared at the Old Bailey.De Zoysa, 25, is said to have shot four bullets in a holding cell at Croydon Custody Centre in southSergeant Ratana, who was 54, died of a chest wound, while De Zoysa was also injured.
De Zoysa, formerly from Banstead in Surrey, appeared at the Old Bailey via a video link from prison today. The defendant was in a wheelchair, wore a fawn-coloured turtleneck and had his right arm in a blue sling. When court staff asked him to confirm his name, De Zoysa wrote it down on a white board using his left hand and held it up to the screen.He is charged with murder, possession of prohibited firearms and possession of firearms and ammunition without a certificate.Judge Justice Jeremy Baker remanded him in custody until a further hearing on April 24 at Northampton Crown Court.
