The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday it has filed murder charges against Gustavo Matias Morales in the death of Jorge David Alvarado.
SALINAS — The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday it has filed murder charges against Gustavo Matias Morales in theAccording to the DA’s Office, Alvarado initiated a traffic stop Friday at about 10:41 p.m. on East Market Street in Salinas. The DA’s office says Morales suddenly pulled over in his vehicle, immediately exited and fired a barrage of rounds at Alvarado while quickly advancing on the officer’s patrol car.
In addition to the murder charge, the DA’s Office said special circumstances for murdering a police officer and charges of shooting at an occupied vehicle and a firearm enhancement were also filed. The special circumstances render this murder a capital offense punishable by death or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Because the case involves an officer firing his weapon, the DA’s Office is investigating the shooting. Sherri Hall with the DA’s Office said no further information will be released Tuesday.
