The falcon disappeared last week and was presumed dead or at least driven from the territory, but suddenly on Tuesday, she reappeared.

, Annie, the female half of UC Berkeley’s much loved peregrine falcon pair, has returned. In a Facebook post, Cal Falcons, the group of scientists and volunteers that monitors the falcon’s activities, announced the news with a head scratch and an apology.

Annie, who has mated with long time partner, Grinnell, was expected to start laying eggs in early March, but instead, she disappeared last week and despite searching the skies and the ground, volunteers and camera monitors had detected no sign of her. Condolences poured in from fans who eagerly watch UC Berkeley’s falcon cameras, which are stationed on the Campanile. Fans had been accustomed to seeing Annie and Grinnell tend to the eggs and later, the hatchlings. In the past six years, the pair have had 14 chicks, 13 of which survived to fledge the nest.

Then on Tuesday, the cameras captured images of Annie, perched on the tower’s ledge, big and bold like she’d never left.
