Adut Akech points to the ritual of cleansing and moisturizing her skin as a sacred moment of self\u002Dcare.
“I take that moment to think about where I am in my life and how far that I’ve come. My journey,” the 22-year-old South Sudanese-Australian model, who has worked with brands ranging from CHANEL to Valentino and is a global brand ambassador forThe time spent carrying out the simple, routine steps of cleansing and moisturizing is also when Akech checks in with herself.
“You don’t realize how important it is until you’re talking to yourself, and you’re looking at yourself in the mirror telling yourself you’re beautiful,” Akech says. “I try to encourage that a lot when I speak to my fans.” She recalls often hearing from others how well she was doing — “Everybody around me tells me how proud they are of me,” she says — but she wasn’t saying those words to herself. Until recently.
“I always told myself that I would love to see myself on one of these billboards, or walking through the duty free,” she says. “My first trip to Paris, when I started my international modelling career, I went through the duty free and saw the Estée Lauder beauty stand and the billboards that they had. And I told myself, I hope one day that this is going to be me.
“I just started wearing sunscreen two years ago, and honestly, I wish I had started wearing it a lot earlier and listened to the people who said how important it is,” she says. “And now, I can’t stress enough how important it is.” Akech admits she took a different path with her own skin care at first, eschewing her mom’s model of less is more.
