Christmas tins and boxes are now also on the shelves

Shoppers have been left stunned after supermarkets started stocking mince pies and selection boxes - despite Britain basking in record temperatures. Some Tesco customers dubbed the chain's festive decision 'ridiculous', while one scrooge said it forces people to spend more money at Christmas.

It comes just a day after the hottest day of the years was recorded on Thursday when temperatures of 32.6C were recorded in Wisley, Surrey. Another record loomed today as the heatwave continued, marking six consecutive September days above 30C, beating five set in 1911. One shopper in Sheffield, called Amanda, said she feels like shops putting out their Christmas stock is 'making people worry more about the cost of living.' She said: "It's ridiculous - it's getting earlier each year and you are forced to feel the financial pressure already.

"It's making people worry more because of the cost of living crisis. It feels like it's a way of us getting us to spend more of Christmas."
