The Super Mario Bros. Movie has broken an unlikely record this weekend in its continued sweep of the box office. The film, which stars Chris Pratt as the iconic video game character Mario, opened in theaters on April 5 and raked in the highest-grossing opening weekend ever recorded for an animated film. However, in its second weekend at the box office, it took second place behind 2019's monster hit Frozen II.
Per Deadline, the Super Mario Bros. Movie box office is poised to make a comeback by the end of this weekend. It is set to close out Sunday with a domestic box office gross of $58.2 million, giving it the highest-grossing third weekend for any animated film. It is miles ahead of the previous record holder, Incredibles 2, which earned $46.4 million.

Currently, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been weaving between the records set by Frozen II and Incredibles II, which stand at No. 2 and No. 4 on the list, respectively. In order to land somewhere between those two titles, Mario will have to earn another $600 million or so. While that will become more difficult once Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 drops on May 5, there is still quite a bit of time for the film to make up that ground and go for the gold.
