The nation's formal symbol of sovereignty, known as the Great Seal of Australia, underwent a change earlier this month, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signing off on a redesign which completely stripped the symbolic representation of King Charles III's authority of any mention of the monarchy.
Anthony Albanese's subtle change to the Great Seal of Australia appeases Labor's left, even as it helps preserve the monarchy, constitutional law expert claims
The previous design, which was authorised for use by royal warrant in 1973, featured the same elements, but was encircled by the words"Elizabeth the Second Queen of Australia." Liberal National Party Senator James McGrath, speaking to the same publication, agreed, while also hitting out at the supposed"secrecy" surrounding the decision.
That view is shared by Professor Matt Qvortrup, a globally respected Constitutional law and referendum expert, who told SkyNews.com.au Mr Albanese's decision to redesign the Great Seal was almost certainly an effort aimed at"appeasing the left faction"."Although at the same time, he's not doing anything."
Rumblings from within Labor appear to back up the latter view, with the party left licking its wounds following the failed push to establish a Voice to Parliament.
