Belton ISD hopes to soon expand classroom space for students in their special needs program.
Twenty-one-year-old Macy Young enrolled in the Belton ISD Delta Program. In classrooms at Belton High School, students with special needs are working on transitioning into adulthood. The program is all about building independent life skills, like getting a job or cooking.Jennifer Ramirez is the executive director of special programs. She recently stopped by a classroom to make sandwiches with some students.
But soon these students could have a space that feels more like home. The district is expecting a 25% increase in students who need Delta services next year. While the more than $168 million proposition has received some pushback, parents like Heidi Jackman are supportive. “We spent a lot of time telling her like, ‘You know when you’re done with high school, you’re going to leave high school. Life is going to look different. You need to find a job. You need to go to college like your older siblings.’ And it’s really difficult when college is back in a high school,” Heidi added. In March, the Bell County Republican Party passed a, which include Proposition A, seeking $168,825,000 in bonds, and Bond Proposition B, seeking $5,000,000 in bonds.
