Students and their families walked five miles in the hot sun to demonstrate the need for another high school in Salt Lake City.
The walk Tuesday from East High to Glendale Middle School took students over two hours — a walk parents said some of the kids do regularly, and something they want the district to acknowledge.
There are three high schools in the area that are part of the Salt Lake City School District: West, East, and Highland. Families in Glendale felt strongly about the district opening a fourth school closer to them. Parents of Glendale students walked alongside their kids to send a message: “Say yes to Glendale High.”
Ida Yanagui, a mom of one of the students, said, "This is just sun, but they do it in the winter, and when it's cold. God forbid they miss the bus, then they have no choice but to make this walk."They hoped the district was listening."They say to walk a mile in somebody's shoes to understand it," Jimenez said. "Maybe you should walk four miles, and we'll see how difficult it is.
