A highly contagious virus normally found in birds has been discovered for the first time in a Texas mammal — a striped skunk in the Panhandle.
The infection was confirmed by theThe virus spreads readily between animals through direct contact and, indirectly, through environmental contamination, Texas Parks and Wildlife said. When mammals catch it, it's mainly by eating infected animal carcasses.
The risk that people will contract the virus from birds remains low, the agency said, but it urged people who can't avoid contact with wild animals to"take basic protective measures" — gloves, face masks and handwashing.The virus infects the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts of birds. It can spread rapidly and can cause high mortality in infected poultry, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The discovery of the infected skunk prompted Texas Parks and Wildlife to caution wildlife rehabilitators — people who care for sick, injured or orphaned animals — to exercise caution when taking in animals that exhibit symptoms consistent with HPAI. Those symptoms include"incoordination, stumbling, tremors, seizures, lack of fear of people, lethargy, coughing and sneezing or sudden death," the agency said.
