The Strictly pro was diagnosed with grade three aggressive breast cancer in May and had a single mastectomy in June
Amy Dowden has opened up on how close to death she has come during her recent treatment for breast cancer.
Amy undergoes one cycle every other week and she admitted that she only feels good the night before each one because it takes that long to recover. She said: “I had a temperature and didn’t realise the severity of having a temperature. I stood up, collapsed, Mum rang the emergency number and they said ‘phone an ambulance immediately’. From there everything got very serious.
“We met the paramedics a week later and they said if I had gone to bed that night I might not have woken up the next morning.” Amy, who has suffered from Crohn's disease since she was 11, discovered the lump in her breast the day before she went on her belated honeymoon with fellow dancer husband Ben, with whom she runs a dance school and has won the British National Latin Dance Championships with. She had only just begun checking herself, following a charity trek with the breast cancer charity CoppaFeel!
Amy has admitted that she didn't want to go ahead with the chemo first as it would mean she'd lose her hair and she wouldn't be able to dance on Strictly with a partner but she was convinced to do it by doctors.
