A busy city street has been closed as the demolition of Nottingham's 'ugliest building' continues. and end on April 16, but Nottingham City Council said it was closed prematurely after "concerns" were raised over the Bendigo building on the evening of Monday, April 3.
The city council explained its highways team hoped to reopen the road on Friday, April 7, before the planned eight day closure to enable the demolition of the former Royal Mail sorting office. The owner of the site, Bricks Group, was contacted for comment. The Bendigo building, which has previously been labelled Nottingham's ugliest building, had stood vacant for 20 years but is currently being knocked down. Nottingham City Council passed plans for it to be replaced by a huge 13-storey student development in August 2021.Godwin Developments, who were the applicants for the student scheme, sold the approved scheme back in April 2022 to Bricks Group, who then reduced the planned bed spaces from 692 to 661.
Previously plans for a nine to fourteen-storey block with 244 apartments for the site were approved in 2008 after an appeal. But the permission expired before it was implemented. The student block plans were approved after nearly £1 million worth of Section 106 planning obligations were secured. An off-site Open Space contribution of £713,452 will be made by developers.
