I knew we might be in for a riotous night at the theatre when a woman sat down next to me carrying a pint glass full of red wine.
Then there are those who simply cannot bear not to look at their phones despite having paid good money to watch the action on stage or who to and fro to the toilet, disturbing the row as they squeeze by. It’s as if the etiquette of how to behave in a theatre has vanished. A new survey by the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications and Theatre Union found 90% of theatre venue employees had experienced or witnessed unacceptable behaviour from audiences - assaults, vandalism and racist language. Two thirds said things had deteriorated since the pandemic. Now don’t get me wrong, I absolutely don’t think you should sit as quiet as a monk in a theatre.
