Lafferty knows it's very early days but respect Davis commands means stars will sit up and take notice of interim boss.
As his Northern Ireland captain and the midfield stalwart who played behind him during two Ibrox spells, the new Rangers caretaker boss preferred to do his talking on the pitch. The laconic 38-year-old chose to lead through his on-field deeds rather than dressing room declarations, inspiring club and country by dictating games rather than dominating the pre-match din.
“Davo’s not the type who will come in and start shouting his mouth off,” said Lafferty. “But when he talks, people listen. I don’t want to start putting him in the same bracket as Walter as it’s obviously far too early for that and let’s be honest, there will only ever be one Walter Smith. “I remember not long after Ian Baraclough took over as Northern Ireland manager, we were playing Bosnia over in Sarajevo in our Euro 2020 play-off semi-final. Usually it’s the manager that always has the last word before you leave the dressing room but this night, Baraclough turned round to Davo, putting him on the spot a bit, and asked, ‘Davo, what have you got to say to the lads?’.
“Yes, it’s a massive job to lead a club like Rangers – but he knows the team have to win every game, no matter if it’s St Mirren or Real Madrid. Rangers fans expect a good performance and a winning result. That’s the mentality that’s drummed into you. It’s a big job but I don’t think there’s a better man for it than Davo.
But Lafferty reckons his influence around Auchenhowie won’t have gone unnoticed by the squad’s new arrivals. He said: “Davo will have been around the dressing room getting his knee sorted.
