Comics Stephen Colbert and Jim Gaffigan chatted about their lives, which have taken some similar paths, in a wide-ranging, fun conversation at NJPAC on Saturday night.
Stephen Colbert and Jim Gaffigan shared stories about growing up the youngest in large families.A couple of Irish Catholic guys from big families sipped Old Fashioneds as they talked about being failed football players, weary dads and successful comedians.
“What does it signify?” Colbert posited about being Irish comics, “that we need large quantities of sunscreen or anger issues?” Among those who spoke before the main event was Senator Cory Booker, who said when he was “the bachelor mayor” of Newark, he would “hang out with his four best friends – Ben and Jerry, Stewart, and Colbert. And now he is in our house in New Jersey.”
The evening was a genuine conversation, with neither trying to work routines, although the night was full of humor. Full of family stories, too. Colbert is the father of three, and Gaffigan has five. They noted how having kids saps energy and brain cells, with the youngest child often getting the easiest, most exhausted version of their parents.
