State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced that he is entering the 2026 gubernatorial election in a video posted on Tuesday to X, formerly known as Twitter. The move came two months after California’s top educator said that he was “seriously exploring” a run for the office.

Thurmond on Tuesday highlighted his experience as a social worker, which involved creating a transitional housing program for young adults aging out of the foster care system, and championed his development of school-based mental health programs, as well as teaching life skills and civics to incarcerated children.
