The police semis serve several different roles in the department.
images of a marked big rig with police lights went viral four years ago and left many people with one question: Does the Florida State Highway Patrol actually use semi trucks to pull drivers over?“There are several divisions of the Florida Highway Patrol. One of those divisions is the commercial motor vehicle enforcement troopers, aka CVE," Florida State Trooper Steve Montiero told WKMG.
Trooper Steve explained to WKMG's reporters that CVE troopers are dedicated to enforcement efforts on commercial motor vehicles. “It takes a specialized trooper to enforce certain laws that normal law enforcement officers cannot. This semi-truck is just one of the tools they have to enforce aggressive driving and noncompliance on our highways,” Trooper Steve told the outlet.Florida Highway Patrol Lieutenant Derrick A. Rahming Senior said the semis were "properly equipped to initiate a traffic stop," but added that they were "used primarily for spotting.
“Most people pay no mind because this type of vehicle is the last thing someone is thinking about, but I am here to tell you that this vehicle is very real, it is considered a law enforcement vehicle and it is used throughout the state, especially on Interstate 10," Trooper Steve told WKMG. Lieutenant Rahming Senior told CDL Life that the police semis were also used to pull the department's "No-Zone" demonstration trailer, which is used for local outreach and driver education to promote safe driving around commercial vehicles.
