Millions of State Pensioners are set to miss out on up to £300 help towards winter heating bills this year.

Earlier this week, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced that the annual Winter Fuel Payment will become means-tested from this year, which will see around 10 million State Pension ers across the UK miss out on between £100 and £300 in seasonal help for heating bills. The rule change means around 1.5m older people currently in receipt of Pension Credit or other income-related benefits, are guaranteed to receive the payment automatically during November and December.

During the election campaign, the Labour Government pledged to keep the State Pension Triple Lock for the duration of the next parliament which will ensure nearly 12.7 million older people across Great Britain will receive an annual uprating determined by the policy for the next five years. “If the State Pension was means-tested, HM Revenue and Customs would have to refund Voluntary Contributions to those members of the public, who had paid them, but were not entitled to the payment of State Pension.”

She continued: “The payment of Voluntary Contributions is still available for the public, making the means-testing of the State Pension not really a viable option. She explained: “It is incorporated with your occupational pension, so it may be difficult to actually assess how much State Pension is in pay to a person when part of it is paid with an occupational pension. So it may end up being an administration problem trying to sort this out.
