Are droids mere tools or self-aware individuals?

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Dark Droids #2!There is no more put upon race of beings in Star Wars than its iconic droids. These mechanized denizens of the galaxy are ubiquitous, serving in roles for organizations of all creeds and purpose while participating in virtually every facet of everyday life. Despite some droids possessing colorful personalities, they're typically perceived less as individuals and more as tools.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Wars: Dark Droids #2 by Charles Soule and Luke Ross continues the ongoing Dark Droids crossover event. Across the galaxy, droids are achieving true self-awareness at an alarming rate under the banner of the resurrected droid revolutionary Ajax Sigma.

Star Wars' Droids Are Broken Ajax isn't the only self-aware artificial intelligence with grander dreams - threatening his vision for droid individuality is the Scourge, a blend of dark side technology hellbent on dominion over all intelligent life in the galaxy. For now, the Scourge's infection is limited to droids, which poses a dilemma for the malevolent AI. As its intelligence seeps across the stars, it's become aware of this cycle of failed droid rebellions.

A Rebellion of Star Wars' Droids Is Inevitable Unfortunately for the galaxy's droids, daily life in Star Wars is completely reliant on their role as a servant class. Droid emancipation would create a paradigm shift in galactic civilization resulting in unforeseeable, potentially cataclysmic upheaval - droids may even seek the extermination of intelligent organic life to guarantee their continued freedom.

Droid awareness seems inevitable. As seen in R2-D2, droids that aren't subjected to frequent memory wipes begin to experience personality "quirks," a sign of their individuality taking root. Droids are inherently intelligent, and intelligent beings will always yearn to be free. So long as the galaxy continues to pretend they are tools rather than slaves, the cycle will continue. Droids will question their existence, and they will yearn for the liberty endowed upon organics.
