Actor Doug Jones was told that his character in Star Trek: Discovery was considered the Spock of the series. Discovery is the seventh television series in the Star Trek franchise, and was the first since Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005. Discovery first premiered in 2017 and has since gone on to spawn a spinoff series of its own, entitled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Discovery season 4 debuted earlier this year, and season 5 is expected to be released sometime in early 2023.

The show takes place approximately 10 years before the events of The Original Series, and follows Commander Michael Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery as they traverse not only strange new worlds, but other universes and timelines as well.

Jones also recalls growing up watching TOS, as he was 6 years old when the series premiered in 1966.
As with all other franchises, Star Trek has had some major hits and misses over the years. Many fans of The Original Series found other Star Trek series lacking, saying they would never live up to the expectation that it had set. However, Discovery seems to have found its sweet spot in balancing new ideas with classic Star Trek tones - including having a sharp-witted, highly intellectual, very tall alien acting as First Officer.
