Host St. Thomas didn’t win the team title at the 2023 TAPPS state wrestling tournament, but it did crown two individual state champions – including the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weight classes.A winner at 182 pounds last year, the senior secured the 190-pound state championship Saturday by technical fall, dominating his opponent for a 17-2 victory on the center mat.
He pinned his first two opponents Saturday before beating Bay Area Christian’s Titus Grumbles with one of his signature moves – the tilt. He scored six points on tilts in the second period, then ended the match early with another one 23 seconds into the third. “The key is making space,” Malveaux said. “You’ve got to dive through them to get them on top of you, then post your leg in the ground so they can’t roll out of it.”“I really focused on my endurance,” he said.
