The fast-moving Spring Creek fire south of Parachute expanded to 3,000 acres Tuesday -- with only 5% containment -- amid increasing winds, spreading into the White River National Forest and kicking out plumes of brown smoke.

A fast-moving wildfire in western Colorado south of Parachute expanded to 3,000 acres Tuesday amid increasing winds, spreading into the White River National Forest and kicking out plumes of brown smoke as firefighters mobilized to try to stop it.

“We experienced what is often referred to as a ‘Blowup,’ ” said Hugh Fairfield-Smith, operations section chief of the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit.said that fuels, slope and topography on Monday all aligned where firefighters did not have resources in play and the result was a blowup — rapidly expanding fire. Hot, dry and windy conditions pushed the fire.

Federal officials in Colorado have ordered the deployment of firefighting helicopters and other aircraft to drop red fire retardant slurry ahead of flames, 25 firetrucks and more than 300 firefighters.
