Spring Break has become an economic boon across the South, from Virginia Beach right around the peninsula and on down to Galveston. Here's why one Alabama Gulf Coast town said no.

Close means close: The Florida/Alabama state line separates the town of Orange Beach, Alabama from Perdido Key, Florida. In fact, the line runs just a few yards to the west of the Panhandle’s most famous beach bar/honky-tonk, the notorious Flora-Bama. The legendary watering hole is an enormous draw for locals and spring breakers alike, and has been for over a half-century.

Some historical background is required: The Tampary family had a booming business for its Flora-Bama liquor store/bar on the state line in 1964, and other retailers of alcohol in Perdido Key did as well because the state of Alabama was then largely dry. In fact, at the beginning of the 20th century, Alabamans voted for Prohibition on a local, county by county basis.

If you’re looking for a party town, the City of Orange Beach is not it. If you choose to violate the law, you will go to jail.
