A no-fly list can prevent a catastrophe

If you haven’t flown lately, you may be out of touch with the degree to which some air passengers have lost their minds. It’s not about waning enthusiasm for stale air, bad food, and hours of contact with lumpy, sluglike creatures wearing gym clothes and maniacal glares. It’s that some have chosen this venue to have meltdowns at 30,000 feet.

Airlines already are allowed to ban passengers whether they have been convicted of a crime or not, but Bastion wants anyone convicted of an onboard disruption to be added to the same no-fly list that the government uses for terrorists. If they are skeptical of the mandate, let them drive. Disagreement over a mask policy does not excuse a public temper tantrum. Airlines must protect their customers from violent lunatics who are endangering lives, and alert other carriers to ground them -- perhaps permanently.Don’t miss the best in editorials, opinion columns and commentary from NJ.com writers.
