Another Spanish travel destination could introduce a tourist tax
Santiago de Compostela is a picturesque Galican city in which the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage culminates. The picturesque Galican city welcomed nearly 440,000 'pilgrims' visited last year.
As reported by Wales Online, the idea of a tourist tax was first put forward by the former mayor Xosé Sánchez Bugallo in April, with 2025 the likely year of introduction. It is hoped the tax will raise over €3million a year to maintain Santiago's historic centre. Speaking in her inaugural speech as mayor, Sanmartín said: "I want this municipality to stop being just a tourist destination and a theme park.
