🇪🇸 A law aimed at strengthening animal rights in Spain plans to ban the sale of pets in shops, convert zoos into wildlife recovery centres and make training compulsory for dog owners
Animals will be banned from use in fairs and shows, and could be sent home from zoos – but hunting with dogs and bullfighting has been left off the draft legislation
The law, which MPs will vote on next month, will change the treatment of pets and wild animals in captivity in a country which has faced criticism over the way animals are cared for. Endangered species which are native to Spain, like the golden eagle or vultures, will be brought to zoos which will become wildlife reserves.

Some 167,000 dogs were abandoned in 2021, according to the Affinity Foundation, a non-governmental organisation.
