Virtus Solis plans to place an expansive solar array in the highly elliptical Molniya orbit with the help of SpaceX's Starship.

A start-up aims to revolutionize clean energy by harnessing unlimited solar energy from space. To make this futuristic idea a reality, Michigan-based start-up Virtus Solis aims to use SpaceX’s Starship.Space-based solar generating infrastructure, like orbiting arrays, or solar tiles-based satellites, require low-cost access to space. This is where SpaceX’s Starship comes in.John Bucknell, a former SpaceX rocket engineer, started this startup in 2019.

This massive solar array will measure up to 0.6 miles broad. The Starship will be able to transfer hundreds of 1.6-meter-wide satellites to the Molniya orbit in a single journey. The report highlights that a network of 16 arrays could cover the globe by delivering microwave energy to huge receiving antennas on the ground.

Once the beam reaches the receiver, the invisible radio frequency energy is transformed into usable power through a device known as a rectenna. “In fact, the receivers that we’ve got can be twice as efficient or more than a typical solar plant on the ground,” he added. , SpaceX currently charges less than $3,000 per kilogram of payload. However, the cost of deploying many orbiting arrays remains high.of Starship could reduce this deployment cost. SpaceX has reportedly “promised” to launch satellites into orbit for “$10 per kilogram” once the Starship becomes fully reusable.
