King, who received a $1 million signing bonus when he re-signed with the team in March on a deal that includes $3.5 million guaranteed, had $911,389 of his fully guaranteed $2 million base salary into a signing bonus. The accounting move creates $455,695 in salary-cap space for the Texans, who have a tight salary cap.
King played outside more last season, moving from his traditional nickel spot in coach Lovie Smith’s trademark Cover 2 scheme and intercepted three passes last year. The former Los Angeles Chargers All-Pro selection and Iowa standout has seven career interceptions. He has also played for the Tennessee Titans and joined the Texans on a one-year, $5 million contract last year.
