We chat with Deborah stars SophiaBush & DeborahAnnWoll about whether they'd want their own time-manipulating device:
WARNING: Spoilers for the movie, Deborah.Now available to watch on Video on Demand, Deborah centers around an engaged couple who invite a group of lifelong friends to their house for the weekend. By using a device called "Deborah," they are able to pause and rewind small blocks of time when conversations within the group lead to conflicts. But while their previous interactions may be erased, an intense emotional residue is left behind.
Do any of us really have a line? Or are they fluid depending on what we think we can get away with, with a lack of accountability? And I just thought that that was a really interesting thing to explore how you will hold your own moral line and ask that question inside of a world that Noga wrote and directed that was so funny and so cringy and at times painful, and then would make you laugh again. I was like, "I will go anywhere to do this movie." And it turned out it was Utah.
But really working with Noga made the aspects of that that I found exciting and the parts of creating sameness and, at the same time, having to differentiate each experience, add the increasing feeling of discomfort in every take, working with someone like her that I really felt like I could trust and that I could look to as a sounding board because we weren't watching playback, made it terrifying in the best way. It was like skydiving, it was exciting.
Deborah Ann Woll: I like being physical. Again, another thing I don't get to do very often in this business, and I really enjoy being physical. The behind the scenes of that thing is that I dislocated my shoulder the very first take that we did. So I did that entire violent action sequence with basically like, Tiger Balm and taped up and everything I could do—all kinds of popping painkillers to just kind of get myself through it. But it was fun. I had a great time.
It's permission to needle a little bit and then finally, I think, at the end of the story is when it just gets so tight that they burst and you get this extraordinary explosion of feeling and fear and hurt and anger because it has been so tight for so long. And we've all just been plucking at each other. That image helped me, I think, in scenes sometimes to try and, one, support myself, but maybe hopefully support my cast mates in finding that tension.
