Sonny Vaccaro went against the grain in his recruitment of Michael Jordan and ended up altering the shoe industry forever. 'All I did was have faith in (Jordan) when no one else did.' mr_jasonjones on the new film “Air,” in theaters Wednesday.
Sonny Vaccaro didn’t attend a Nike work meeting in 1984 to suggest to colleagues to pursue Michael Jordan. His primary job was to sign college basketball coaches, who would then have their players wear Nike.“I happened to be the last person they asked,” Vaccaro said. “It was just my subconscious that led me to say those words. I didn’t know I was going to say Michael Jordan until they asked.”Directed by Ben Affleck, “Air” tells the story of Nike’s pursuit of Jordan, led by Vaccaro.
“They embellished some things, but I can honestly say there were no lies,” Vaccaro said. “All I did was have faith in when no one else did.” The pursuit wasn’t based on a longtime friendship. Vaccaro did not know Jordan. He didn’t play in Vaccaro’s Dapper Dan Roundball Classic, the high school all-star game that had featured some of the best players in the country since 1965. North Carolina wore Converse, so Vaccaro didn’t have a relationship with Smith.
“What are you going to do with three people if they can’t play?” Vaccaro said as a response to those who questioned not going cheaper to land three players.
