Truckers are reportedly planning to pass through Ohio en route to the Washington D.C. area to protest COVID-19 and other restrictions.
For weeks, organizers have been planning U.S. truck convoys to protest mask and vaccine mandates and other perceived government restrictions, inspired by the standoff in Ottawa that shut down commerce in the Canadian capital city and at the international border in Windsor across from Detroit. While there's no certain way to verify how many trucks ultimately will pass through Ohio on their way to Washington D.C., one Indiana-based organizer says it will be a lot.
Lt. Merrill Thompson, of the Madison County post, said he heard that the convoy of about 200 vehicles — about 20 miles long — will leave Monrovia, Indiana, Thursday morning and pass through Greater Columbus in the early afternoon. In Canada, trucks parked at crossroads snarled traffic in Ottawa for three weeks, and in Windsor disrupted commercial transports across the U.S. border. That eventually led Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to temporarily invoke emergency powers for police to remove the blockades.
Removing truckers from the commercial pipeline just when they're needed most — amid economic uncertainty and rising gas prices and inflation — is contradictory to some. News reports of convoys already in progress have included accounts of American flag-waving supporters showing up along roads and bridges to cheer on the convoys, whose organizers call for eliminating any future COVID mandates and better responses from Washington lawmakers."I just love these guys coming through," said Tommy Burkhard, who owns Tommy's Double Barrel BBQ, a mobile eatery in Springfield in Clark County."I want to stand on an overpass and throw out some flags.
