Rossendale Borough Council's Anne Cheetham said parents have responsibilities but some 'don’t do what is expected' of them
Food banks, poverty, health problems and the responsibilities of parents and governments were raised during an emotional debate at Rossendale Borough Council. One Conservative councillor said some parents failed to do what is expected of them, despite support from schools, public services and governments.
Whitworth Community First Coun Alan Neal said he had raised issues of school children hunger in the past, which had been supported by some but not all Rossendale councillors. He added: “In 2021, the former chancellor who is now prime minister [Rishi Sunak] decided to help businesses hit by covid with the Eat Out To Help Out scheme. Yet we are not prepared to feed children in school.
“From time to time, we see, even on our own area, cases where there might be something about the look of children. Sometimes they don’t look clean – do they have hot water? Have they had all the injections that they should have? I bet you can name several families who, in principle, do not want certain injections into their bodies.
‘Children’s needs will always take precedent over senior lives. But always remember that parents have responsibilities. Sometimes parents don’t do what is expected. But if you try to their child away, they will fight you. And whatever is done, there will always be some who miss out.” “The economy is key. Our financial circumstances are better in many ways than when Labour left office, We are committed at all levels to getting on with tackling the issues, rather than writing another letter.”
He also said childcare costs were ‘astronomical’ at £1,000 per month. Labour Coun Steve Hughes said: “Everybody apart from the top one per cent has got poorer over the past 12 years. There were no food bank years ago. Now there are many. Working people cannot afford to feed their children. Last year, we had warm banks because people cannot afford to hear their homes. Bills have doubled.
