Solomon: Why watch the XFL? Houston Roughnecks coach Wade Phillips, for starters

Coaching is in his blood. And it seems that as long as his blood is pumping, Wade Phillips will be coaching.

Yes, the XFL is a minor league, but Phillips didn’t coach the Super Bowl-winning Denver Broncos any harder than he did Lutcher-Stark High School. So rest assured, he will put his all into the Roughnecks.“The way I've always coached — and I’ve been at this for a little while now — it's about the players and not a scheme or a script you may have in your head coming in,” Phillips said. “See what you have and tailor to their strengths.

This is a different type of football, of course. But what started as a wild Vince McMahon idea is looking to be more legitimate. In the league’s previous iteration, the Roughnecks were rolling through their 2020 schedule with a 5-0 record when operations shut down due to COVID-19. They enter 2023 as the favorite to win the championship.

With Johnson as an owner and ESPN broadcasting or streaming every game, the XFL will receive plenty of exposure. The entertainment value will tell the tale, of course, but on paper this is legitimate football. The credibility of former NFL coaches like Phillips and Jim Haslett, who coaches Seattle, and former Oklahoma Sooners coach Bob Stoops, who guides Arlington, will help.
