The hopeless ending to Le Transperceneige shows how Snowpiercer's inspiration focused more heavily on the climate crisis than issues of class.

While many fans know Snowpiercer from the acclaimed 2013 film or the following TV adaptation, the story originally comes from a 1982 French graphic novel titled Le Transperceneige. However, rather than the vicious class-based satire of the on-screen versions, the comic is about the dangers of climate change, leading to a very different ending.

Le Transperceneige was written by French comic book writer Jacques Lob and artist Jean-Marc Rochette, while the popular 2013 film Snowpiercer was directed by Bong Joon-ho and starred Chris Pine as Curtis, a very loose adaptation of the main character of Snowpiercer Volume 1 - The Escape, Proloff.

Le Transperceneige also acknowledges that the post-apocalyptic frozen landscape was caused by a climate weapon of war, unlike the film Snowpiercer which established that the frozen environment was caused by an experiment gone wrong, one that was trying to cool the Earth after the effects of global warming. This hugely changes the messaging of the media, since Le Transperceneige explicitly has humanity end the world because of its worst impulses.

The Original Snowpiercer Is a Warning The graphic novel Le Transperceneige ends with Proloff accidentally killing his burgeoning love interest Adeline by breaking the windows in a car and exposing her to the cold. He is then rescued by a man named Forrester, who informs him that he has been spreading a horrific disease from the back cars, slowly killing all the inhabitants of the entire train.

Ultimately, while Snowpiercer can be read as a satirical swipe at the present state of society, Le Transperceneige is more of a warning for the future, hence the stories' very different relationships with the idea of hope in the future.
