Slobodan Rubezic says everyone in the Balkans knows who Aberdeen are – and he can't go out in the streets of Belgrade without being reminded of it.
The Montenegro defender arrived from Novi Pazar in the summer and has quickly become a key pillar of Barry Robson's team. Alongside Slovenia's Ester Sokler and North Macedonia's Bojan Miovski, he's part of a growing Balkan contingent at Pittodrie and a signing policy that is bearing fruit for the Dons.
According to the 23-year-old, though, it's not the recent influx of talent from that region that's made them a household name back home ... it's the history of the club and especially their success under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1980s. He claims he's even been recognised while out at the shops in the city of his birth.
He told Red TV: "Aberdeen is a big club. It's stupid to tell people that because everybody knows, even in the Balkans. I went to buy clothes for my sisters and every time you go out in the city, in Belgrade, a lot of people say 'how is Aberdeen, it's a big club’. "Everybody knows because of Sir Alex Ferguson. It's a big club with big history and you get respect when you tell people you play for Aberdeen."
