Skylight is an innovative project that transforms your ceiling into a real-time visualization of air traffic and celestial events. Using a Raspberry Pi and an RTL- SDR radio, the system decodes Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast ( ADS-B ) signals from airplanes to project their exact positions, airline, model, and destination onto your ceiling.
This not only offers an educational glimpse into aviation but also lets you match overhead sounds to specific flights. Beyond planes, Skylight can display a live or time-lapsed night sky, showing comet trails, bright stars, planets, satellites, and even the International Space Station. Users can control settings via their phone, speeding through time lapses to track when certain satellites passed overhead. The project is currently open-source, with plans for a commercial version via crowdfunding.
For DIY builders, the required components include an RTL-SDR Blog V4 radio, a Raspberry Pi 5 (8 GB), a 1080p projector with a quiet fan, a micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable, and a rotating mount. An optional sky camera, like a VISCA-over-IP PTZ with RTSP, can enhance the experience. Detailed setup instructions and code are available on the project's website, allowing users to run the system either with a Raspberry Pi or from a separate server.
