TUV councillor says 'Belfast is a predominantly Ulster Scots town'

A proposal to use special fonts for Belfast street signs in English and Irish at City Hall has been dropped after Sinn Féin and the unionist parties joined forces.

The proposal also suggests exploring “options around other scripts that may be required for bilingual signage in future, relating to other languages, to avoid any delays in delivering any such signage”. “We are hearing that people want it to be plain and simple, and they want it to be accessible to the younger generation who wouldn’t be aware of that font and wouldn’t find it very easy to read.

“There is a wider aspect to the motion, that we look at the broader consideration as to whether we need unique signs around Belfast in itself. Signs which are unique to the city, are part of our built heritage and create an aesthetic and a look for the city.” DUP Alderman Dean McCullough said: “Far be it from me to get involved in an inter-Irish debate, but the reality is this will mean additional cost, at a time when we are in a cost of living crisis.
