AKRON, Ohio – Nonprofit news organization Signal Ohio on Wednesday announced it has secured $5 million in funding to launch a newsroom in Akron dedicated to providing independent, public service journalism for the community.

The Akron newsroom will employ 11 people and will be part of a statewide network of independent newsrooms. Signal launched an 18-personlast year. The creation of the Akron newsroom is based on feedback from an American Journalism Project needs assessment that revealed residents didn’t have enough information about their communities and the decisions that impact their lives.
