Horrified travellers discovered the famous tree which featured in the 1991 Kevin Costner film, ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ chopped down, lying across the famous wall. Si, who comes from the North East took to Instagram to vent his fury and said whoever responsible had ‘murdered a sentinel of time’. He said: “I’ve just been made aware that we’ve lost the sycamore at Sycamore Gap somebody has felled it apparently.
Nearby brewery, the Twice Brewed Brew Co, has said it is “absolutely gutted” about the incident. In a post on X it said: “Absolutely gutting morning on Hadrian’s Wall. No more Sycamore Gap.” Councillor Ian Hutchinson, who represents Haltwhistle on Northumberland County Council, called the incident a “malicious act of vandalism”
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Officers have condemned the vandalism of an iconic #Northumberland tree and vowed to bring anyone responsible to justice. A full investigation has been launched after the Sycamore Gap Tree was felled overnight in what police believe to be a deliberate act of vandalism.Superintendent Kevin Waring said: “This is an incredibly sad day. The tree was iconic to the North East & enjoyed by so many who live in or who have visited this region.
