STURP spent 17 months preparing for the frantic 120 hours they were allowed to examine the shroud and procure samples. The team was full of prestigious scientists who worked on high-level projects, including Rudy Dichtl , who came straight from building what he called a “Buck Rogers deathray” for the American Air Force to be the team’s physicist. Schwortz was also fresh from war science when he traveled to Turin, having photographed atomic explosions from the air.
“He implied he was a member of our team,” says Schwortz. “He was never a member of our team, but he never corrected that. Years later, [Lead STURP Chemist Raymond] Rogers was dying and they asked him to speak to the American Chemical Society. He couldn’t travel anymore, so he gave them my name. I showed them all the peer-reviewed science that showed McCrone was completely wrong. The biggest shock to the group was that he was never in Turin and never saw the Shroud.
