Sheriff's officials: Man found unresponsive in jail cell died by suicide [Breaking]
A 27-year-old man found unresponsive in his jail cell Monday died by suicide, the Sheriff’s Department said Saturday.
According to a news release the department issued, an autopsy confirmed that Pedro Junior Ornelas III hanged himself.in his single-occupant cell, where he received medical aid until relieved by the fire department, department officials said. Ornelas, a San Diego resident, was taken to a hospital and died two days later.
Sheriff’s Lt. Joseph Jarjura said the department’s Homicide Unit will thoroughly investigate the death, as it does all such incidents. Ornelas’ death marks the department’s eighth in-custody fatality. A record 19 people died in county jails last year, with a 20th death occurring shortly after a person was released from custody for medical reasons.
