The samples were collected by medically qualified personnel after receiving approval from the Euskadi Ethics Committee . The study was performed following the tenets of the Helsinki Declaration on Biomedical Research and adhered to the ARVO statement involving Human Subjects. Before tear collection, a written informed consent was obtained from all the participants once the nature and possible consequences of the study had been fully explained.
